Website
Analysis
So
you have put in your metatags, created a catchy
TITLE, worked on the content and you think your
website is ready for search engine submission.
Before
you submit your website, do a check by following
the steps below to make sure your website is indeed
ready for search engine submission.
- Make
sure you have a robots.txt file running
on the server to make sure robots can process
your site. If you need more info on what a robots.txt
file is and what it looks like, visit The
Web Server Administrator's Guide to the Robots
Exclusion Protocol.
- Check
your HTML code. Make sure your code is
clean with no errors and no extra closing tags.
- Check
proper use of title, meta tag description and
meta keyword tags, analyse the competition and
see what keywords they are using. Type in a
keyword phrase related to your own website in
one of the major search engines and see who
comes ahead of you. Look at the source code
of your competitors website and compare with
your own work. What keywords do they use in
their title and metatags. Do keywords appear
in the content at the top of the page?
- Check
proper use of IMG ALT tag. Have you put some
text relevant to the page in the ALT attribute?
- Do
a Keyword Density Analysis. There are tools
out there that can help you with keyword density
analysis. Check out search engine optimisation
tips or the Cool
Tools section.
- Check
for broken links. The Cool
Tools section also has a few ideas for
checking for broken links.
- Ask
your hosting provider questions about server
setup. Is your website being hosted virtually
or does it have its own dedicated IP? Virtual
hosting means your website is sharing an IP
address with many other websites. If one of
those other websites gets blacklisted or receives
a lot of traffic, your website may encounter
problems, as search engines may have a hard
time finding your website, or may not be able
to spider it at all.
